our practice

Our design approach is influenced by places we have experienced in our travels. They range from the Japanese summer palace and garden of Katsura to the North American vernacular landscape, and from the houses of Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto to the gardens of Fletcher Steele and Beatrix Farrand.

Both Nancy and Bill contribute to all aspects of every project, from early concept work to construction documents and on-site construction observation. Over time, we have developed close working relationships with a group of contractors, engineers, custom fabricators, and suppliers. We stay involved during the construction process, working with builder and client to ensure that the project is completed in a timely, controlled manner.

Our projects exhibit a commitment to craft. We build with materials that will withstand the rigors of our climate and are often regionally sourced. We consider the environmental consequences of our material choices and construction systems. When working with an existing building, we look to retool and rethink. Our preference is to build smaller and better. All our work is connected to its place, to its history, and to its own and its owners' future.
