PENNSYLVANIA RESIDENCE

Located in a rural woodland setting, the first built project we completed together, in 1994, is an addition and renovations to a contemporary post and beam house.

The addition reconfigures and enlarges the dark, main bedroom and visually connects it to the landscape. A sitting/dressing area and a bathroom under a vaulted roof is clad in recycled barn siding to match the existing house. The flat seam copper roof is finished in Baltic plywood on the interior. Two large, arched clerestory windows and an interior transom above a mirror panel open up views to the tree canopy and draw natural light deep into the bedroom. The bathroom is finished in large panels of honed marble on the walls and radiant floor, with minimal, modern fixtures. Cabinetry is locally sourced bird's-eye maple. A jewel-like space, the addition adds light and luxury to the house.

Integrated with the existing rustic post and beam structural system, the dining space is opened to the kitchen.

Custom millwork composed of local black slate countertops, native cherry cabinetry with ebony accents, and glass-shelved display niches are inserted between the kitchen and dining room. Integrated lighting with brushed aluminum backing in the upper cabinets helps illuminate the room.
