AMTRAK HIGH SPEED RAIL CORRIDOR
Boston, Massachusetts

Amtrak added a paralleling station in the urban neighborhood of Roxbury, bordering Boston's Southwest Corridor Park, as part of improvements to the rail corridor between Boston and New York City. We worked with representatives from the community and Amtrak to design and produce construction documentation for a screening system that would protect the electrical equipment housed within the station and make it feel like less of an intrusion into the park and the neighborhood.

Built of brick and concrete piers infilled with curving metal bar stock panels, the screen wall utilizes materials associated with the neighborhood and the railroad. The location of the twist in each vertical bar shifts to create a repeated arching pattern that is revealed through movement.

The piers and panels are to be prefabricated offsite and assembled like a kit of parts that could also be used on other sections of the rail corridor.

The screen wall is designed as a piece of infrastructure, robust and able to withstand potential abuse. As part of the urban landscape, it will visually link to other bounding elements such as gates and fences associated with the park.
